Dream On a.k.a It’s 2017, Let’s do this

“Yes: I am a dreamer. For a dreamer is one who can only find his way by moonlight, and his punishment is that he sees the dawn before the rest of the world.” ― Oscar Wilde, The Critic as Artist

“Those who dream by day are cognizant of many things which escape those who dream only by night.” ― Edgar Allan Poe, Eleonora

I couldn’t pick which quote I wanted more today. They are both so apropos.

I dream big. I fear big. This causes an unending stream of anxiety and depression with massive ups, and terrible downs.

I love to create. I love knitting, reading, crafting, writing. My body, though, hates me. My wrist cause painful numbness in my hands (carpal tunnel), my back and neck crick and crack (osteoarthritis in my upper spine), my hips bemoan me (bursitis, sciatica – I fell down some stairs almost two years ago and still have not healed). My knees snap and crackle with derision (possibly arthritic), my feet prickle and groan when I walk (plantar fasciitis), and the mind grows exhausted; ever fighting the good fight (Multiple sclerosis).

I still dream big. I dream of being so healthy that not even my kids can keep up. I dream of hiking again in the woods, following what ever deer trail presents itself. I dream of creating creatures from clay, writing my ever more distant novel, completing a tome of poetry. I dream of recording myself reading to my youngest, singing lullabies, rocking it out at a concert without needing a seat close by.

I dream of being free of anxiety and fear. Confident in every stride I take, every word I write, every thought spoken.

I dream that this year I will finally find a way to make it all happen. That the pain, fear, anxiety, exhaustion will all fall away with the spring rains, and never return.

A woman can dream, right?

Get Off Your Ass, Canada, and VOTE! Election 2015

“Anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that ‘my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.” ― Isaac Asimov

Some people say why bother. I say get off your ass and do it! YOU want to complain about the government and not vote? Don’t talk to me. I have voted in every election since becoming old enough to. I didn’t always know why. I didn’t always understand the issues, but I made the effort to try.

You think Harper sucks – GET OFF YOUR ASS AND VOTE!

You want improved social care – GET OFF YOUR ASS AND VOTE!

You want to improve healthcare, education, and services for First Nations peoples – GET OFF YOUR ASS AND VOTE!

You want stronger economic actions – GET OFF YOUR ASS AND VOTE!

You want better care for seniors – GET OFF YOUR ASS AND VOTE!

You want to save our waterways, environment and scientific freedoms – GET OFF YOUR ASS AND VOTE!

You want to rally our nation for a better tomorrow – GET OFF YOUR ASS AND VOTE!

You want to be our country to be visionary and be a world wide leader – GET OFF YOUR ASS AND VOTE!

You want Canada to return to its values – GET OFF YOUR ASS AND VOTE!

You want to help the poor, the homeless, the refugees – GET OFF YOUR ASS AND VOTE!

That doesn’t include fear of a piece of clothing (sorry folks, the niqab is about as scary as a balaclava {if you don’t know what that is, look it up}). The doesn’t include Nazi level racism (NO you can’t make a minority group a scapegoat for your fears and not sound like a Nazi).

Our right to vote is bathed in the blood, sweat and tears of our forefathers and mothers…don’t let what they fought for go to waste – GET OFF YOUR ASS AND VOTE!

I’ll say it one more time, Canada – GET OFF YOUR ASS AND VOTE!

Freedom in song

“Music expresses that which cannot be put into words and that which cannot remain silent” ― Victor Hugo

I sometimes have a hard time expressing myself. Sometimes words become lost to me, nuance, silence.

When I listen to music, I feel free of it all. Free from all.

Sometimes you hear a song that is so uplifting it shows you that everything is possible. Sometimes a song can help you dig into the darkness, churn it around, and move on.

When there is no one to turn to, there is always music. To me, true freedom is when you are able to listen to any song, any genre, anywhere you choose to be.

Strange Days

“This is the strangest life I have ever known.” Jim Morrison

I have, on occasion, been known to read the news. Actually, I should qualify that. I have been known to read what is considered news. What’s the difference? Someone’s sexuality or sexual orientation or gender should not be considered news – it should just be. It should be a non-issue, completely non-issue. News is hearing about the latest supreme court development, finding out what’s happening in a foreign country, the latest political landscape, etc – NOT someone’s change of clothes or *gasp* latest girlfriend/boyfriend/marriage/divorce.

We live in such a strange world. Pro-athletes and entertainers (musicians and actors, etc) get paid millions to entertain us and yet those charged with protecting and saving our lives are paid a pittance in comparison (paid well by lower class standards, but still a pittance in comparison to entertainers).

We live in a strange world where someone loving another is considered sinful, evil, and has a potential to collapse the world as we know it. Funny, those same argument were used to fight segregation and inter-cultural marriages…the world is still turning.

We live in a bizarre world where freedom of speech is so valued that if someone disagrees with you they are somehow quashing your freedom of speech…or better yet someone wanting to be treated like a human being is going against your freedom of religion. I will never understand that last one. If people actually read that book written 2500 years ago – they may actually come upon some passages that say things like love thy neighbor or thou shalt not kill and a few other choice tidbits like that. But hey – fire and brimstone is far more glamorous…non?

We live in a strange world where suddenly acts of courage and bravery are supposedly delineated by function rather than by the person. Odd…definition of brave and courage from the Merriam-Webster Dictionary:

adjective \ˈbrāv\

: feeling or showing no fear : not afraid

brav·er brav·est

Full Definition of BRAVE

1:  having or showing courage <a brave soldier> <a brave smile>
2:  making a fine show :  colorful <brave banners flying in the wind>
3:  excellent, splendid <the brave fire I soon had going — J. F. Dobie>
brave·ly adverb

noun cour·age \ˈkər-ij, ˈkə-rij\

: the ability to do something that you know is difficult or dangerous

Full Definition of COURAGE

:  mental or moral strength to venture, persevere, and withstand danger, fear, or difficulty

I see nothing in either definition that limits brave or courage to a certain class or function of a person.

We live in a strange world where bigotry and racism are considered part and parcel to freedoms of religion and speech. Sure, you have the freedom to speak your mind and pray to your God…and I have the freedom to call you out for your hatred and bigotry disguised as faith.

I hope, for the sake of my children and myself, that this strange world starts to see that love and peace are the true solutions. That hating someone for who they are is not productive or logical…or human.
